It analyses security as a fundamental element in contemporary society, addressing its evolution, foundations, and the different public and private models that shape it. The module studies the origin and development of policing institutions, their constitutional and legislative framework, and the forms of cooperation between public and private security. European security systems —particularly those of the United Kingdom, Germany, France, and Italy— are compared to understand their structural and functional differences. Additionally, the Spanish policing model and its regional development are examined, with special focus on Catalonia. Through practical activities and case analyses, students acquire the competencies to plan, organise, and manage security systems from an ethical, social, and sustainable perspective, in line with SDGs 10 and 16.

It introduces students to the use of statistical and analytical tools applied to criminology, essential for rigorous data interpretation and informed decision-making. The module covers concepts of descriptive statistics, linear models, and correlation analysis, as well as notions of probability, random variables, and confidence intervals. The module covers the fundamentals of thanatology, forensic pathology, criminalistics, and forensic psychiatry, enabling students to understand how medical knowledge is applied within the judicial system and crime investigation. Through a theoretical-practical approach, topics such as human identification, injury analysis, causes of death, post-mortem processes, and psychological alterations linked to criminal responsibility are studied. The course fosters the ability to analyse evidence, prepare expert reports, and collaborate in investigations with scientific and ethical rigour. It analyses the processes of design, implementation, and evaluation of public policies, with particular emphasis on those related to security, crime prevention, and social reintegration. The module provides methodological tools to plan and assess public programmes from both theoretical and applied perspectives, developing the ability to measure their effectiveness, efficiency, and impact. Through participatory methodologies and the use of comparative evaluation models, students learn to prepare diagnoses, reports, and projects aimed at improving public action. The module promotes the use of indicators and logical planning frameworks, alongside the analysis of policies related to crime and security. The module combines technical, legal, and organisational knowledge to design and implement comprehensive security systems in companies and institutions. Topics include current private security legislation, risk management, security plan design, protection of critical infrastructures, and cybersecurity. Additionally, students are introduced to concepts such as criminal compliance, open-source intelligence (OSINT), and defence in depth. Through practical exercises and case analyses, students develop leadership, teamwork, and decision-making skills in emergency or crisis situations. The content aligns with SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth) and SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities), promoting ethical, efficient, and sustainable security management.

It provides the necessary tools to design, implement, and evaluate security and emergency systems and plans in public and private contexts. The module combines risk analysis with the study of occupational safety, self-protection, and emergency response, applied to the criminological field. Students learn to plan security strategies based on identified risks, coordinate actions between public administrations and private entities, and develop plans tailored to different situations and environments. Analyses research techniques and methodologies in criminology, with particular emphasis on information management, data analysis and strategic foresight. The module teaches students to distinguish between data, information and knowledge, applying these concepts to the study of crime, security and prevention. Topics include the history and operation of intelligence services, different intelligence domains—criminal, economic, national and military—and the use of risk analysis and risk management tools. Practical applications are also explored, such as drafting forensic reports and using technologies including big data and artificial intelligence for criminal forecasting. The module promotes critical thinking, the ethical use of information and innovation in criminological research, aligned with SDGs 4, 5, 9 and 16.

They represent an essential experience that connects academic study with professional practice in the fields of criminology, security and prevention. During the professional placement, students apply the knowledge acquired, develop technical, ethical and research competences, and strengthen their analytical, communication and teamwork skills, thereby enhancing graduate employability and supporting clear career progression pathways.

Placements are undertaken within public institutions, security companies, justice departments, custodial settings or social foundations, under the joint supervision of an academic tutor and a workplace mentor. This structured work-based learning environment ensures alignment with professional standards and reinforces practical expertise.

Assessment combines the employer’s report (40%) and academic supervision (60%), evaluating engagement, professional development and the quality of the final reflective report. In addition, the placement integrates the Sustainable Development Goals, promoting education committed to ethics, social justice and sustainability.

It constitutes the culminating stage of the Bachelor’s Degree (Hons) in Criminology and represents the practical application of the knowledge and competences developed throughout the programme. Students must produce an individual project, dissertation or study, focused on research or professional intervention within criminology, under the supervision of an academic tutor. The Final Year Project (FYP) carries 12 ECTS credits and requires students to demonstrate analytical ability, critical thinking and scientific rigour. It must also be aligned with one or more Sustainable Development Goals, reinforcing the student’s ethical and social commitment. The process concludes with a public viva before an assessment panel, where academic quality, methodological coherence and the relevance of the work presented are evaluated.
